The Student Association on Monday elected new student representatives in various colleges.

A motion passed to allocate $5,000 from the Student Advancement fund to Mental Health Awareness Week at Monday night’s Syracuse University Student Association meeting.

The Office of Health Promotion’s budget for Mental Health Awareness Week was cut, said SA Vice President Angie Pati.

The first day of Mental Health Awareness Week is intended to be more light hearted with activities to attract students, including obstacle courses, dunk tanks and free T-shirts to raise awareness, Pati said.

“We are doing a fun way to look at mental health as a continuation and not just in a crisis mode,” she said.

She added that the money will pay for items such as ribbons to tie onto trees representing people affected by mental health problems, T-shirts and inflatable playsets.

The $5,000 should be a large enough contribution for Mental Health Awareness Week, with extra to roll back into the Student Advancement fund, President James Franco said.

Franco also announced that SA’s partnership with University Union to donate at least $10,000 to hurricane relief was still in the works.

Details about which organizations will receive the funds and when the money will be delivered are to be determined. The organizations have already collected $10,000, but will potentially try to raise more, Franco said.
